Buy a Buck, Sell a Niner, Hold a Raven

📝 News & Notes

HC Mike Macdonald said Kenneth Walker is “showing that he’s earning more opportunities to get the ball” [News Tribune]
My take: We are seeing a few situations around the league where teams are shifting how they want to be using their two-man backfields. The Seahawks are seeing what the stats have been telling us that Kenneth Walker is the far more explosive back and should be getting more volume. Elsewhere we’re seeing Kyren Williams’ efficiency over Blake Corum noticed, Bhayshul Tuten emerging over Etienne, Woody Marks over Nick Chubb, Rico Dowdle over Nick Chubb, and Kyle Monangai getting closer to an even split with D’Andre Swift. In general, shows the value of these 1b / handcuff backs and strategies that lean towards acquiring many of them.

Bucky Irving: BUY
After Sean Tucker’s big game, the market is assuming he’ll earn a bigger role going forward, even when Bucky returns. But we saw this same movie last year after Bucky put up 32.7 points, only to follow that up with games of 4.3, 2.0. and 2.2 points. With Bucky profiling as the back they actually trust and a cupcake playoff schedule for RBs, he’s exactly the kind of profile I want to target at the trade deadline.

Deebo Samuel: SELL
People did NOT like on Monday that I said Deebo Samuel should not be considered a fantasy start despite him putting up his best game last week. And that reaction tells me there is no better time than now to sell him. His yards per reception have dropped from 14.9 in 2023 to 13.1 in 2024 to 8.9 yards this year, with a lot of that attributed to his YAC similarly declining from 8.8 to 8.3 to 5.5 this year. Use this past game (the first time he surpassed 50 receiving yards since Week 5) as an opportunity to sell.

Lamar Jackson: HOLD
People are tilting, but nothing in Lamar’s profile says “panic.” He’s still an elite dual-threat QB, the recent dip is mostly matchup/road driven, and the upcoming schedule is exactly what you want for a rebound. Unless you’re getting another top-5 QB plus an upgrade elsewhere, you just ride it out.
