📝 News & Notes

The pads are on across the league and the depth charts are starting to sort themselves out.

Kyler Murray (MIN, QB) and J.J. McCarthy are splitting first-team reps in Minnesota's quarterback competition, and Murray "had the edge" when fans got their first look Saturday.
My take: This is simply an excuse to say ignore any noise about any potential QB competition. This is Kyler’s job and he will be the starter. My take here though that may differ from the market is I think his job security is less secure than the QBs going around him (Bo Nix, Jared Goff, Jordan Love, Baker Mayfield). Barring injury, each of those other QBs is locked into a full-season. However if Kyler struggles and the Vikings are 4-10 and out of the playoffs, I think there is a legitimate chance they would turn to JJ for the final few games for a last chance effort.

Luther Burden III (CHI, WR) has been the "talk of the town" through the first days of Bears camp, sliding into a full-time starter role now that DJ Moore has been traded to Buffalo.
My take: That vacated target share plus a 2.68 yards per route run as a rookie, quietly one of the more efficient marks in his class, makes Burden a high-upside bet entering his sophomore season. The challenge is the range of outcomes is substantial given the target competition and high draft capital of both Odunze and Loveland. I also don’t love his stacking partner Caleb Williams is about a round overdrafted in my opinion.

Chris Olave (NO, WR) returned to full 11-on-11 team drills Friday after signing a four-year extension, ending a brief "hold-in" over his contract.
My take: This eliminates any hold-in risk and furthers my confidence in Olave being a strong bet. If your fantasy season didn’t go so well last year and you stopped paying attention, I recommend go refresh your memory of how strong his end of season was. WR2 over the last 5 weeks of the season!

Rashee Rice (KC, WR) is being "eased back" into the mix after a May cleanup on his right knee, working a planned partial workload before exiting for rehab midway through practice.
My take: And if you watched this video of him running a route, I can understand why you might be a bit concerned. I’m not adjusting my rankings at all off this news so if the market does, I’ll likely be getting more Rice in the mid-third.

Injury Corner w/ Deepak Chona

Dr. Deepak Chona (@SportMDAnalysis) is here with a data-driven read on the injuries shaping draft boards. His full rundown:

Malik Nabers, WR, NYG - Wk 1 TBD, lean to playing. Cutting + decelerating smoothly on video. Suggests nearly ready for next step (contact)

Tucker Kraft, TE, GB - Lean heavily toward playing Wk 1 + practicing in ~2 wks. Age 25 + 96th %ile athlete predict recovery of ~90% pre-injury level Wk 8+

Patrick Mahomes, QB, KC - Likely playing Wk 1. Data + comments suggest dip in rushing attempts + output until ~Dec

Bucky Irving, RB, TB - 70% dip in receiving stats post-injury '25. (Wk 1-4: 4.8 rec, 48 yds vs Wk 13-18: 1.8 rec, 14 yds). Data favors return to pre-injury

Cam Skattebo, RB, NYG - Most see stats dip ~12 months (late-Oct), but suspect short yard role = less affected

Jonathon Brooks, RB, CAR - Suspect strong '26. ~50% of players do regain pre-injury form after 2 ACLs. Youth, high draft capital, elite athleticism = predictive of favorable outcome. Data favors shorter prime due to cumulative damage to knee so would pass in dynasty

Alec Pierce, WR, IND - Unclear diagnosis. Playing thru + treating w/PRP first suggest relatively low severity. Suspect return by Wk 1 to ~pre-injury level, but elevated risk here due to limited info

Tank Dell, WR, HOU - Data strongly favors stats dip thru '26 w/rise in '27

Rome Odunze, WR, CHI - Suspect injury concern = overblown. 5 TDs 1st 4 wks of '25. Then played thru injury w/limited production. Data heavily favors return to pre-injury level now

George Kittle, TE, SF - Wk 1 TBD but realistic. Data favors major production hit + injury risk

Daniel Jones, QB, IND - Playing. Data favors dip in rushing. O-line = likely good enough to prevent pressure. Expect emphasis on short/mid-range passing to avoid hits early

Sam LaPorta, TE, DET - Data suggests return to pre-injury level Wk 1. Longevity does see notable dip

Ricky Pearsall, WR, SF - Most PCLs do well w/o surgery. Limited surgical data in NFL Non-NFL data suggests outcomes almost comparable to ACL. Doubt career-threatening Lean 9-12 months + moderate dip early '27 + eventual return to baseline. Dynasty buy low if rebuilding

Quinshon Judkins, RB, CLE - Likely no limits Wk 1. Avg = 12 month (Dec) dip. Data factoring in age + draft stock + elite combine metrics projects 2 months shorter (mid-Oct)

Drake London, WR, ATL - WR3 thru Wk 11 of '25 when hurt PCL. Dipped upon return. Data favors rise

Omarion Hampton, RB, LAC - In-season ankle surgery + major O line injuries make '25 hard to judge. Expect major rise into '26

Christian Watson, WR, GB - Solid play post-ACL in '25. Data strongly suggests improvements going into yr 2 post-op. Potential value at ADP

Dalton Kincaid, TE, BUF - '24 PCL injury lingered into '25 and caused 4 missed games. Almost certainly caused stats dip if he was playing thru pain/swelling Comments suggest recovery has progressed well w/o needing surgery. If true, data = very favorable for rise in '26
