📝 News & Notes
The running back money printer hasn't stopped all week, and Jahmyr Gibbs just topped every back who came before him.
Jahmyr Gibbs (DET, RB) is the new king of the position. The Lions signed him to a three-year, $67.5 million extension worth up to $75.75 million, making him the highest-paid running back in NFL history at $22.5 million per year, edging Bijan Robinson's deal from earlier this week.
My take: This doesn't move Gibbs so much as remove any lingering doubt. He's my 1.01 and has been all summer, and a team handing a back this kind of money is telling you exactly how central he is to the offense. Not concerned by the minor camp back tightness and will continue to draft him #1 overall and not overthink it.
Jonathan Taylor (IND, RB) got his bag too. Hours before Gibbs reset the market, the Colts locked up their franchise back on a two-year, $44 million extension, the largest third contract ever handed to a running back.
My take: When Daniel Jones was healthy, Jonathan Taylor was the overall RB1 with 25.9 PPG, 4.5 points clear of RB2. I’m expecting regression but still targeting Taylor as my RB4 for this year and wouldn’t fault people wanting him in home leagues higher than any WR.
Emeka Egbuka (TB, WR) is back on track. He returned to practice Thursday after a couple days off for lower-body soreness, and with Mike Evans now in San Francisco, the target vacuum in Tampa is wide open.
My take: In a vaccuum, I think Egbuka is going to have a great season as the alpha for a stong Bucs team. The challenge is the market is treating him as if he’s already taken that next step. He’s a target of mine in redraft leagues but in best ball where he’s going in the middle of the third round, I find myself often preferring the RBs or other WRs going around him.
Rashee Rice (KC, WR) cleared a big hurdle. He took part in 11-on-11 team drills for the first time all camp and hauled in a pass from Patrick Mahomes.
Chase Brown (CIN, RB) is getting the deluxe usage. Paul Dehner Jr. reports the Bengals are moving him all over the formation, the same way they deploy Ja'Marr Chase, and he's coming off his first 1,000-yard rushing season.
My take: I am grouping Rashee Rice and Chase Brown together as I think there are a lot of similarities between how I’m considering these two. Both have very valuable roles in explosive offenses but are also their entire fantasy value is dependent upon retaining that role throughout the year, despite not having the talent to truly secure it. I spoke more about this comparison at the 7 minute mark in this Best Ball stream.
Tank Dell (HOU, WR) is finally back. He practiced in pads for the first time since his December 2024 knee injury, catching passes from C.J. Stroud in a limited role, though he's not cleared for 11-on-11 yet.
My take: There is something to be said about a guy who you’ve actually seen play to his upside that keeps me coming back to Tank Dell. It must be said though the role is unlikely to be the same, Jayden Higgins is clearly emerging as the #2 WR in this offense, and it’ll be impressive if he can play to 90% of his former self with this injury. But what if keeps dragging me back.
