Below are the news and notes and injury updates to catch you up on the week.
📝 News & Notes
Jordan Mason landed on short-term injured reserve after surgery on a small thumb fracture, and Alec Lewis reports Aaron Jones is in line for a bigger role in Minnesota. On top of that, Kyler Murray (concussion) was only limited at Wednesday's practice.
My take: Jones is a clear RB2 with that backfield to himself for at least a few weeks. If Murray can't clear protocol, Carson Wentz keeps this thing humming enough to feed Jones and Justin Jefferson.
Sam Darnold was ruled out for Sunday at Arizona with the glute injury, and Drew Lock will start for Seattle.
My take: I am expecting Darnold to miss a couple games and in his absence, I appear to be less bullish than market on how Drew Lock can support the Seahawks pass catchers. JSN likely fine but everyone else gets docked.
Zay Flowers was a non-participant Wednesday, and Deepak Chona says it would be an outlier for him to suit up Week 2 on a hamstring re-injury. Ja'Kobi Lane had wrist surgery and is on IR.
My take: Rashod Bateman is the Ravens wide receiver to own with both perimeter guys down in a Lamar Jackson offense. He’s the best bet but there’s always a chance the team decided to ride Mark Andrews or hand it to Derrick Henry 25+ times.
Ladd McConkey did not practice Wednesday with the rib injury, though Deepak notes the rib is likely not fractured, so a Week 2 return is on the table with a possible dip in targets.
My take: Chargers need McConkey healthy as it was clear last week they can’t rely on just Quentin Johnston and Tre Harris. Crazy to call game 2 a must win game but lose this and they’re 0-2 before hitting the road for games against Buffalo and Seattle, followed by games vs DEN, @KC, and @LAR.
Nico Collins was limited at Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury, with reports he getting tests done to evaluate the severity.
My take: this does not sound good, for fantasy or for the already depleted Texans wide receiver room.
Elsewhere, the good news piled up: Michael Penix (knee), Alvin Kamara (knee), TreVeyon Henderson (ankle), and Alec Pierce (hand/wrist) all practiced fully Wednesday, and Joe Burrow says he will play through back tightness Sunday.
⚕️ Injury Corner w/ Deepak Chona
Brock Bowers (LV): Week 2 is possible, but Week 3 is the likelier return, with the data favoring a rapid ramp of about two weeks. Long-term concern stays high given the prior PCL.
A.J. Brown (NE): the 6-week timeline points to high severity, with a likely major production dip and re-injury risk over roughly the first six weeks back.
Malik Nabers (NYG): soft-tissue injury rate runs about 2x during an early return, but targets and production both climb over the first 4-6 weeks post-ACL. He already hit 9 targets in Week 1, and the ceiling is elite.
Sam Darnold (SEA): a suspected glute tendon tear leaning toward a 3-week absence. Limited NFL data, but he should regain most of his passing production, with rushing likely limited.
Zay Flowers (BAL): it would be an outlier for him to play Week 2 on the hamstring re-injury, and early-return re-injury risk is high, especially with a re-aggravation.
Ladd McConkey (LAC): reports suggest the rib is not fractured, so Week 2 is on the table, but typically with a major dip in targets.
Alec Pierce (IND): 4 catches for 61 yards on only about 30 snaps, and with a typical WR ramp of about four games, expect his snap count to rise quickly over the next three weeks.
Daniel Jones (IND): real concerns about his ability to drive the ball deep off the right Achilles.
