How the Jonnu Trade Reshapes Two Offenses
Miami Has a New Big 3
Welcome to all the new FFin60 subscribers! And thank you to all the existing ones that are continuing to show support.
We are still in the lull of NFL summer news but things are starting to heat up 🔥
📝 News & Notes
BIG trade news: Jonnu Smith has been traded to the Steelers. The Dolphins will receive a late-round pick swap while Jonnu Smith will get a 1 year, $12 million contract extension (good for 9th highest paid TE). [Adam Schefter]
My take: This is a real fantasy ripple effect. Jonnu Smith was the TE1 overall from Weeks 7 onward last year, and now both Jonnu Smith and Pat Freiermuth get relegated to late-round dart throws as they compete for targets in a run-heavy, slow-paced offense. I’ll wait for ADP to settle before reacting, but I’m likely passing unless one gets drastically undervalued. Meanwhile in Miami, this is a boost for the Dolphins’ Big 3. With Jonnu gone and no clear replacement, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and De’Von Achane should see even more concentrated opportunity. I’m bumping:
Tyreek Hill up toward the 1-2 turn
Waddle into the DeVonta Smith/Zay Flowers tier
Achane alongside Derrick Henry and Ashton Jeanty at the beginning of the 2nd round
Dolphins have interest in Michael Mayer, per Dolphins beat reporter [@OmarKelly], among other TE trade negotiations [@TomPelissero]
My take: They’ll likely add someone, but Mayer or similar names won’t project anywhere near Jonnu’s 2024 usage. Unless they bring in the unlikely marquee TE (i.e., Mark Andrews or Dallas Goedert), I’m not expecting a signing to materially impact the Dolphins Big 3. And it’s probably too cute to use your last round picks to guess among the future trade candidates.

📊 Poll of the Day
For yesterday’s poll, it may have looked familiar to a tweet I put out back in March.
This is a common 2v2 decision current best ball drafters have
Pairing A: Justin Jefferson and your choice of Josh Jacobs/Bucky Irving
Pairing B: Bijan Robinson and your choice of Tee Higgins/Terry McLaurin
What start to a best ball draft would you rather have?

At the time, Barkley was the clear #2 ADP despite the market still preferring the Justin Jefferson 2v2. Since then, the market has shifted as savvy drafters are liking their teams from that spot better when starting with an elite WR.
I continue to agree that after Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson (and CeeDee Lamb if you prefer him) continue to be very strong picks to start drafts given the RB options available to you in rounds 2 and 3. It aligns well with my two most common build types this year, hero RB and double RB starts. After this Tyreek news, it’ll be interesting to see how that shifts things as I expect him to start going around the 2/3 turn.

Who do you think will be the greatest beneficiary of Jonnu Smith leaving the Dolphins? |
