📝 NFL Preseason Week 3 Takeaways
As the preseason has shifted from four games to three, team tendencies have differed in their approach to which players to play in the final game. We likely do not learn anything new in just this week but combined with the others, we can gain some clarity to help us predict team tendencies to start the year.
Below is my best attempt at figuring out what actually matters:
Kaleb Johnson plays behind both Jaylen Warren and Kenneth Gainwell. I believe Warren is the safe play that will have a role all season, tbd on how large. And Kaleb Johnson remains the high upside, pure rusher that should see his workload increase throughout the season.
No clarity on the Steelers’ #2 WR. My lean is Metcalf will be the only fantasy relevant WR, with both TEs finishing with more receptions than any other WR.
Mason Taylor rested with the starters. I am not expecting the Jets to throw much but Taylor is a decent late-round best ball pick or dynasty/keeper sleeper.
Cowboys 5th round rookie RB Jaydon Blue suffers low ankle sprain amidst a strong debut. He remains one of my favorite upside rookies given his speed and pass-catching skillset with rather dusty competition.
Everyone’s favorite “sleeper” Jacory (Bill) Croskey-Merritt sits with the starters, though that distinction may be misleading as he has also been seen in a non-contact jersey recovering from a shoulder injury.
Browns rookie Dylan Sampson gets the start over Jerome Ford. While Sampson profiles more of a pass catcher who thrives in space, he has the potential to take a larger role to start the season. Even if Judkins were to sign imminently, the lack of training camp and preseason give Sampson a strong leg up in the early part of the season.
Isaac TeSlaa reels in his third touchdown this preseason, making a strong case for the WR3 spot. TeSlaa scored a 9.97 RAS making him the 11th (out of 3441) most athletic WR prospect in the last nearly 40 years.
Kendre Miller looks locked in for the RB2 spot in New Orleans. Previously his issues were far more off-the-field than anything talent related so if those have been cleaned up, he could play a strong complementary role to Kamara’s pass catching skillset.
Marvin Mims appears headed for a full-time role after never crossing 50% in any regular season game last year. If this usage continues, combined with his strong per route efficiency thus far, he’ll be a screaming value at his current 11th round price.
Ollie Gordon II may be favorite for RB2 in Miami after putting up a strong preseason. Jaylen Wright, the previously expected backfield partner to Achane, has struggled in his appearances in addition to a leg injury. Combine that Achane himself is struggling with a calf injury (though is likely to be ready for Week 1), Gordon is a solid pick/stash in all formats.
If you want to dive deeper into this past weekend, highly recommend this article by Nathan Jahnke. And in addition to these notes specific to Preseason Week 3, I agree with these notes regarding preseason takeaways from Adam Levitan.
