NFL Week 3: Buy / Sell / Hold

Will the Rookie RBs Continue Underperforming?

📝 News & Notes

  • Vikings’ Aaron Jones placed on IR with hamstring injury, will miss at least the next 4 weeks [Ian Rapoport]
My take: While the Vikings offense has struggled with JJ McCarthy at the helm, this backfield condensing to just one primary back upgrades Jordan Mason to a weekly RB2 with upside. Especially this week at home vs the Bengals.

  • Texans’ Christian Kirk expected back this week after missing the first two games [Aaron Wilson]
My take: CJ Stroud has been missing a reliable complement to Nico Collins and I expect Christian Kirk (aka “slot demon”) to help out immediately. This should be a boost for the entire offense.

📝 FF Market: Buy / Sell / Hold

Week 1: BUY Zach Charbonnet, SELL Aaron Jones, HOLD Jaylen Waddle

JAX Brian Thomas Jr.: BUY
Brian Thomas Jr. is 5th among all WRs in expected fantasy points yet 51st in half PPR scoring. This feels like mostly variance and a little not being on the same page as Trevor Lawrence. But I am still confident Brian Thomas Jr. is the WR1 in this offense and for the team to be successful, that connection needs to be strong. Expecting stronger results from him ahead and worth exploring if you can acquire him at a discount from disgruntled owners.

BUF James Cook: SELL
James Cook is the RB1 on the season despite only playing 52% of the offensive snaps. He will continue to have strong games when he reaches the end zone, which can happen a lot on a strong Bills offense, but he has outperformed his expected fantasy points and we can expect his TD rate to regress and normalize. If you can get 1st or 2nd round value in a trade, I’d happily take it.

AJ Brown & Devonta Smith: HOLD
The number of crazy statistics available to describe the first two games for this offense is humorous. For example, Jalen Hurts leads the league in time to throw while also having the lowest ADOT. The Eagles have the lowest usage of their WRs and Jalen Hurts is the only starting QB without a passing TD. I believe there is something to this being how the Eagles want to win (strong defense + no turnovers + efficient run game) but we have seen the absolute extreme version. I’m not buying but willing to hold with belief we see positive regression for AJ Brown and Devonta Smith.

📊 Poll of the Day

Monday’s poll: Which WR will finish with the most receiving yards Monday night?

Correct answer: Quentin Johnston at 71 yds. Just goes to show how much we truly know in a one-game sample size.
