Is Flacco an Upgrade for the Bengals?

📝 News & Notes

CIN Bengals acquire Joe Flacco for late-round pick swap
My take: Is this an upgrade over Jake Browning? Yes. Would Jameis Winston or Russell Willson been better? Yes, probably, but apparently the Bengals never even called.

Browning ranked 30th out of 30 in EPA per dropback among qualifying QBs, 28th out of 30 in success rate, and 27th out of 30 in TD-to-INT ratio. Unfortunately Flacco’s numbers aren’t much better. Where Flacco has the leg up is in catchable ball rate, particularly when throwing downfield. And when there’s a clean pocket, he’s played at about league average this year.

The Bengals are making a bet that either their offensive line can improve and protect Flacco, or that he can return to his 2024 or even better 2023 numbers that led the Browns to a wildcard spot. What they have going for them is a rather friendly upcoming schedule, with 6 of their next 10 games against teams that are top five in giving up points to opposing QBs.

For fantasy, this is an opportunity to feel out your leaguemates. Are they bullish to the Flacco news and expecting Bengals to regain 80% of their pre-draft value? Then this may be a time to sell. Or are they still overly pessimistic and only thinking about Flacco’s 2025 troubles? Then this may be a time to buy low. My overall take is this is a small to decent upgrade over Browning but still brings with it a very low floor for the offense.
