📝 Week 8 Key Takeaways
MIA - Going into this week’s game, the Falcons had given up the 2nd fewest fantasy points to opposing QBs. Which makes it all the more surprising Tua had arguably his best game of the season, going 20/26 for 205 yards and 4 TDs. With Darren Waller on IR, no TE took his role and instead we saw the volume primarily routed to Achane, Waddle, and Malik Washington.
ATL - With both Drake London and Michael Penix Jr. out, the Falcons offense struggled to get anything going until a garbage TD for Tyler Allgeier. Kyle Pitts was the lone bright spot catching all 9 of his targets for 59 yards. This game can mostly be thrown out with expectation London and Penix should be back next week vs. New England.
CHI - D’Andre Swift came into the game nursing a groin injury, which may be a reason him playing only 49% of the snaps (Kyle Monangai was the only other RB to see the field). With Cole Kmet out, rookie Colston Loveland moved into a near every-down role, playing 81% of the offensive snaps. The target volume didn’t match the snaps and routes but it’s a promising sign for a second half emergence.
BAL - With Lamar Jackson an ‘unexpected’ inactive after the team changed his Friday FP to LP, the Ravens went to a run-first strategy, limiting Tyler Huntley to only 22 pass attempts (9 of which went to Zay Flowers). Noteworthy going forward is that Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely had a nearly identical role in snaps, routes run, and targets. Will be difficult to play either if that split continues.
BUF - James Cook had one of the best games of his career, going 19/216/2 against a team that just held Breece Hall to 38 yards, Javonte Williams to 29, and De’Von Achane to just 16. Dalton Kincaid came into the game questionable and only played 22% of the offensive snaps, though earning 3 targets on those 14 snaps.
CAR - Jalen Coker emerges as the #3 WR for the Panthers, playing 66% of the offensive snaps. Both he and Legette though were overshadowed by Tetairoa McMillan earning a 43% target share. Chuba Hubbard continued as the 1a back depsite again being outplayed by Rico Dowdle. Hubbard went 12/34/1 on 57% of the snaps while Dowdle went 8/54/0 on 36% of the snaps.
NYJ - With Justin Fields on the brink of being benched prior to Tyrod Taylor being ruled out with a knee injury, the open question is did he do enough in the Jets’ first win to save his job. Fields was fine but Breece Hall was the star, rushing 18 times for 133 yards and 2 TDs to go along with throwing a TD to Mason Taylor. This game highlights the upside potential for Breece in games the Jets can be competitive.
CIN - Joe Flacco’s existence as a Bengal is as if his primary objective is to get the ball to Ja’Marr Chase (and to be honest, that’s not a horrible idea). Chase turned 19 targets into a 12/91/0. Chase Brown had a strong game scoring one on the ground and one in the air (12/73/1 and 3/32/1) but Samaje Perine (42% snap share) continued to eat into Chase Brown’s role, even in a game they predominantly led.
SF - The 49ers only played 48 offensive snaps, 30% fewer than their season average of 69. This combined with negative game script hit the running game the hardest, limiting them to just 10 total carries. Mac Jones spread the ball around with no pass catcher finishing with more than 50 yards. Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall’s status for Week 9 is still up in the air.
HOU - Woody Marks and Nick Chubb had a near even split, with Chubb getting the majority of the rushing work and Marks the passing. Marks was more efficient in his touches but we expect to see a similar split for the foreseeable future. Jayden Higgins (4/34/1 while leading the WRs in snaps, routes run, and targets) stepped up as Stroud’s favorite target with both Nico Collins and Christian Kirk out this game.
CLE - Quinshon Judkins suffered a shoulder injury in the third quarter and did not return. After he left, Dylan Sampson became the primary back (playing 19 of 27 offensive snaps), similar to the role he played to start the season before Judkins was active. Harold Fannin Jr. continued his ascension, playing 74% of the offensive snaps, leading the team in targets (26% target share), and finishing with a 6/62/1 receiving line.
NE - Drake Maye is continuing to put up Josh Allen-lite performances with his eclectic group of pass catchers, today being led by Mack Hollins catching all 7 of his targets for 89 yards. TreVeyon Henderson had rather unique usage today, only playing 14 snaps but carrying the ball on 10 of those (for 75 yards). Still not comfortable starting him but this might give him more chances to earn a larger role.
NYG - Cam Skattebo suffers a gruesome ankle injury, likely ending his rookie season. Tyrone Tracy (available in 52% of Yahoo leagues) will slot in as a RB2/Flex option given the expected volume and his pass-catching abilities. Jaxson Dart salvaged his fantasy day with a rushing TD but overall struggled against the difficult Eagles defense, only throwing for 193 yards.
PHI - Saquon Barkley left the game in the third quarter (though claimed he could have returned had the game been closer), but not before getting his revenge on the Giants by slashing them for 2 TDs on 174 total yards. The Eagles overall did whatever they wanted, with Hurts throwing for 4 TDs on 20 attempts and Tank Bigsby even rushing for over 100 yards. They have a bye next week which should help in getting Saquon and AJ Brown back healthy.
TB - The Bucs offense looked rough, only managing to total 240 offensive yards. Coming into the game the Bucs said they wanted to get Sean Tucker more involved, which they managed to do giving him just one fewer carry than Rachaad White. Emeka Egbuka led the team in targets (35% target share) but still doesn’t look fully healthy as he only turned that into 3 receptions for 35 yards. Bucs will welcome their Week 9 bye.
NO - Spencer Rattler was benched for rookie Tyler Shough and their stat lines are basically the spiderman meme. Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed tied for a team high 12 targets each as the pass-funnel Bucs drove the Saints to 51 pass attempts. Devin Neal played an expanded role (46% of the snaps) as the primary third-down back which limits Kamara’s rest-of-season upside.
DAL - George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb combined for 58% of the targets, with Jake Ferguson taking a backseat having only one target and no catches. Jaydon Blue had similar to the TreVeyon Henderson treatment, only playing 14 snaps but getting 8 carries. That’s back-to-back weeks he’s been in the 18-19% snap share range which doesn’t make him playable but could hint towards him being a legitimate handcuff for Javonte Williams.
DEN - RJ Harvey may have had the most efficient 17-snap game in history, scoring 3 TDs on 51 yards. Troy Franklin has elevated to the clear #2 WR in this offense (6/89/2 on 63% of the snaps), giving him WR3/flex consideration in fantasy lineups.
TEN - Tyjae Spears outsnapped Tony Pollard this week (52% - 46%), giving even more reasons to not have confidence in starting any Titans in fantasy.
IND - Jonathan Taylor continues his generational season, scoring 3 TDs and totaling 174 yards. Michael Pittman Jr. finds the end zone for the 6th time in 8 games. Tyler Warren had a relatively quiet day (4/53/0) but can still be trusted as an elite TE play each week.
If you want more detailed information on each game, including the full breakdown from the Packers/Steelers game, I highly recommend Nathan Jahnke’s weekly article which is the data source for much of this information.
